What is CBD and How Does it Work?

CBD has been all over the news and the talk of the town over recent years. The hype isn’t for nothing, as researchers continue to find new uses for and benefits of the compound. Keep reading to learn what CBD is and how it provides incomparable botanical support for your pets endocannabinoid system

What is CBD?

Derived from the Cannabis sativa plant such as marijuana or hemp, Cannabidiol or CBD is a naturally occurring chemical compound. It is used to make a variety of products, including those for animals, such as pills, oils, and edibles. CBD derived from hemp is not psychoactive, as it lacks the active ingredient THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) found in marijuana. This is because THC levels found in hemp-derived cbd dog seizures are usually less than 0.3%. These low THC levels are why hemp is a poor choice for those seeking to use CBD for recreation, to achieve a ‘high’ or euphoric effect. Meanwhile, there are few to no effects associated with THC-free CBD. It is preferred for those seeking the benefits of CBD, who want to feel relaxed rather than intoxicated.

How Does CBD Work for Dogs?

Similar to humans, dogs have an endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a complex system of cell receptors and neurotransmitters found throughout the body. They are primarily located in the central and peripheral nervous systems, as well as the immune system. In plain terms, these parts of the nervous system include the brain and spinal cord, as well as nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. Meanwhile, the immune system encompasses white blood cells, antibodies, the complement system, the lymphatic system, the spleen, the thymus, and bone marrow.

The endocannabinoids in the ECS work to balance and regulate your internal organs, to keep your body running properly. If for any reason action needs are taken, the ECS is signaled by CB1 And CB2 receptors. CB1 receptors are found in the central nervous system, while CB2 receptors are found in the peripheral nervous and immune systems. In addition to receptors, there are also enzymes that break down endocannabinoids. Once broken down, the endocannabinoids bind to one of the two receptors. Depending on which one, the related area of the body is affected.

CBD works very similarly to endocannabinoids. Although it does not bind directly to the receptors, it influences them in a way that allows for the benefits associated with the compound. It is in this area kip that the specific function and implications of CBD become clouded, and so researchers continue to search for the answers and additional applications.

What is it Used For?

Let us start by saying that CBD is not a cure-all. It is not a magical substance that will work for every dog, and companies with your pet’s best interest in mind will never claim it to be. This being said, THC-free CBD does offer several benefits and has promising future applications.

When we consider areas where the ECS is found, we also see areas that can benefit from CBD. To start, CBD is most commonly administered to pets suffering from arthritis or who have poor hip and joint mobility. In regards to cancer in dogs, it can be used to boost overall wellness and to support a variety of systems throughout the body. CBD may also be used to evoke a sense of calmness, whether your pet experiences anxiety due to fear, separation, or age. Aside from the calming effects, it can stimulate the production of serotonin to stabilize your dog’s mood. More recently, CBD has shown promising results in reducing the frequency of seizures in dogs. These are just a handful of the ways that CBD can be used to help your furry friend live a longer, healthier & happier life.
