The infertility Talk – Azoospermia & its causes

Azoospermia is a condition of male infertility, caused due to the absence of sperm. This condition does not have any symptoms. It is diagnosed in 1% of all men and 10% - 15% of infertile men. However there are several reasons for this condition, such as:

  1. Vasectomy

It is a surgical procedure for male sterilization or a method of permanent contraception.

  1. Birth defects

These may be in the (Y) chromosomes. There may be cases where a piece of the Y chromosome may be missing (microdeletion) and it may cause infertility.

  1. Hormonal imbalance

Low blood testosterone levels can be a viable cause of infertility.

  1. Injury

Any previously sustained injury can also affect the sperm production, in turn causing infertility.

  1. Varicoceles

This is the obstruction of blood flow to the testicles. This can cause the temperature of testicles to increase and any increase in temperature can negatively affect the sperm production.

There are three main types of Azoospermia.

  1. Obstructive Azoospermia

Male produces sperm, however it is not found in semen.

  1. Non-obstructive Azoospermia (pre testicular causes)

Poor production of hormones can prevent the production of sperm.

  1. Non-obstructive Azoospermia (testicular causes)

Structural defaults may be a cause for no sperm production.

Genetics (inheritance) affect 10% - 15% men with low or no sperm count.

The diagnoses of this condition is very difficult and can only be done when a man who is trying to conceive and cannot. Those men are likely to ask for help and can get tested for Azoospermia.

When tested, you will only be diagnosed as a patient of Azoospermia, when on two different occasions no sperm is found in semen.

There are no specific symptoms of Azoospermia therefore your physician will ask you about your sexual history and medical history, to help them with diagnosis.

There are assisted methods of conceiving that can help treat infertility as a result of Azoospermia. Genetic testing and counseling are seen as an important part of understanding and treating azoospermia.

In patients of obstructive azoospermia (Post testicular cause), reconstruction surgery or reconnection surgery of obstructed or disconnected ducts can be performed. Hormone treatments are also possible in cases where, it is certain that the main issue is low hormone production.

If living sperm are present, they can be retrieved from the testicles for the purpose of assisted conceiving methods such as IVF (in vitro fertilization) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection.

Men with non-obstructive azoospermia (pre-testicular causes or testicular causes) should receive genetic analysis before their sperm are used to perform any type of assisted fertilization. This will help discover if there are any genetic risks that may be passed to children.

Apart from this there are several home remedies that men with Azoospermia can try to conceive naturally. These home remedies include:

  • Avoid situations where the temperature of the penial region may increase.

  • Have more calculated and frequent intercourse
